Tai “red shirts” confirm to rally on Constitution Day

BANGKOK, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) — The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), dubbed Red Shirts, is scheduled to gather on December 10, Constitution Day, to demand for reinstatement of the 1997 Constitution.

“The venue and time of the gathering has not yet been finalized. Initially, the activity will start from 5-8 p.m. tomorrow. The gathering is aimed at calling for a reinstatement of the 1997 Constitution,” ruling Pheu Thai MP and UDD key-leader Jatuporn Prompan announced on Friday.

About 5,000 Red Shirt supporters are expected to join the activity, said Jatuporn.

Meanwhile, Somyos Pleuksa-kasemsuk of Red Sunday, a Red Shirts’ wing, added that his group, along with the June 24 group, will jointly hold an activity on Constitution Day at the Democracy Monument in Bangkok.

The current 2007 Constitution was drafted and imposed by the then military government which toppled Thaksin Shinawatra’s regime in 2006. The pro-Thaksin Red Shirts have demanded the reinstatement of the 1997 charter which was enacted during Thaksin era. They condemn the current Constitution as a product of coup d’etat.
