Viet, Cambodian border provinces promote cooperation

HANOI, March 9 (Xinhua) — The seventh conference on cooperation for development among Vietnamese and Cambodian border provinces wrapped up on Friday in Vietnam’s southern Ho Chi Minh City after two days of working.

Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Home Affairs Sar Kheng co-chaired the conference, with the participation of the two countries’ representatives of ministries, and chairmen and vice chairmen of 20 border provinces.

Participants reviewed implementation of the agreements signed at the sixth conference held in August 2010, and expressed delight at the fine friendship and cooperation among related localities. The positive results obtained during the years have contributed to boost the Vietnam-Cambodia two-way trade turnover to reach more than 2.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2011, a year-on-year increase of nearly 55 percent.

Measures to promote cooperation in 2012 were under discussion, aimed at meeting both sides’ development and celebration of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Year 2012 as approved by the two countries’ leaders.

Of the measures, the two sides agreed to boost the two-way trade turnover to 5 billion U.S. dollars in the coming five years, cooperate in such areas as agriculture, forestry, fishery, healthcare and human resource training, and support each other in border safeguarding and anti-border cross crimes.

A joint statement was released at the closing ceremony, upon which the two sides agreed to expand exchange of information and visits to implement the signed cooperative agreements.
