Thai MPs visit Cambodia to meet two Thai prisoners

PHNOM PENH, March 16 (Xinhua) — A group of eight Thai Members of Parliament (MPs) led by Pheu Thai Party’s Sunai Chulpongsatorn, chairman of Thai Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, arrived here on Friday to promote parliamentary ties and to meet with two “Yellow Shirt” activists jailed in Cambodia.

The group met with Cambodia’s President of National Assembly Heng Samrin on Friday morning. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sunai said his 3-day visit here was to grow the friendship relations between Thailand and Cambodia. Also, he said his delegation will make a visit to Cambodia’s Prey Sar Prison on Friday afternoon in order to meet with two Thai prisoners.

The two Thai prisoners are Veera Somkwamkid, one of the leaders of the People’s Network against Corruption and a high-profile activist in the Thailand Patriot Network, and his secretary Ratree Pipatanapaiboon.

Cambodian court on Feb. 11 last year convicted Veera and Ratree of illegal entry, unlawful entry into a military base and espionage and sentenced them to 8 years and 6 years in jail respectively.

“It is the usual visit. We are the Members of Parliament, it is our duties to pay visits to our Thai people when they have problems,” said Sunai. Meanwhile, Heng Samrin said the delegation’ s visit in Cambodia would strengthen and expand friendship relations and solidarity between the two countries’ parliaments.
