Port calls by U.S.warship enhance military ties with Cambodia: spokesman

PHNOM PENH, May 1 (Xinhua) — The five-day visit of the battleship USS Blue Ridge to Cambodia starting from Monday would help further enhance military ties between the United States and Cambodia, spokesman of the U.S. embassy Sean McIntosh said here Tuesday.

The U.S. Seventh Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge arrived at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port on Monday. During their stay, sailors will join local community service events, and a band of the fleet will also perform at various venues, said the spokesman.

Gen. Tea Banh, Cambodia’s deputy prime minister and minister for national defense, and Gen. Pol Saroeun, commander-in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces as well as other military officers visited the battleship.

The Blue Ridge, with 36 officers and 442 enlisted personnel on board, plays a primary role in providing command, communication and intelligence support to the Seventh Fleet.
