Hun Sen sees opposition party merger as storm in a teacup

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) – Prime Minister Hun Sen has described the planned merger of the opposition Sam Rainsy and Human Rights p​arti​es as a storm in a teacup.

Spe​aking at a graduation c​eremony at the National Institute of Education on Wednesday, he said the merger would not affect the leadership of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party.

Regarding detained Beehive Radio director Mam Sonando, the prime minister said he only had himself to blame and said the government had no plans to close his radio station.

He added that the judiciary would not bow to petitions calling for his release.

Hun Sen also announced plans to address the National Assembly on border issues with Vietnam, calling for live television coverage of his address.

Opposition parties have accused the government of giving Cambodian land to Vietnam.
