Cambodian court releases ex-Russian billionaire Polonsky on bail

PHNOM PENH, April 3 (Xinhua) — Cambodia’s Preah Sihanouk provincial court on Wednesday released Russian former billionaire Sergei Polonsky on bail after he had been detained for more than three months for the accusations of violence against Cambodian sailors, officials said.

“He was released on bail this morning, but remains under the court’s monitoring. He is not allowed to leave Cambodia,” Polonsky’s lawyer Long Salux told Xinhua over telephone.

“We release him at 11:30 a.m. this morning,” Tan Nareth, deputy director of the Preah Sihanouk provincial prison, told Xinhua over telephone. “He was released on bail, so he has to show up anytime when the court summons.”

Polonsky, 40, the former head of the Mirax Group construction firm, was detained together with two Russian companions by Cambodian police on Dec. 31 last year for an alleged attack on the six-man crew of a boat that had reportedly carried the Russians from an island to the mainland in Preah Sihanouk province.

According to the victims, Polonsky threatened the captain of the boat with a knife and locked him up in a cabin and made several crew members jump in the water.

His two companions, Konstantin Baglai and Alexander Karachinsky, were released on bail on March 14.

In 2008, Polonsky was ranked Russia’s fortieth richest man with a fortune of 4.35 billion U.S. dollars by Forbes magazine. Polonsky headed Mirax Group, a large property development company that went bankrupt during the global economic crisis.
